Heritage takes two at Monroe
MONROE - The red, white and blue opened the new year with a bang Tuesday as Heritage swept Monroe Area in subregion action.
The Lady Patriots picked up where they left off in 2008, winning their seventh straight game 47-34. For the boys in the nightcap, they edged the Hurricanes 53-51.
The Lady Patriots (9-5) extended their winning streak to seven after a decisive 13-point victory.
The Patriots improved to 9-5 overall after fending off the Hurricanes (6-8).
Monroe Area's Maritea Duke scored a team-high 19 points.
Alcovy basketball splits with Griffin
GRIFFIN - The Tigers allowed a big lead get away from them before settling down to beat Griffin 53-47. The Lady Tigers were hurt by turnovers in their 44-17 loss Tuesday.
The Alcovy boys jumped out to a 20-10 first quarter lead. However, they allowed Griffin to stick around in the second period, giving the Tigers a 26-21 halftime lead.
Alcovy lost the lead in the fourth period before dominating the final two minutes of the game for the win.
The Tigers' Brad Williams made some crucial outside shots, finishing with 13 points, nine coming from 3-pointers.
In the girls game, Griffin took advantage of Alcovy turnovers and careless play, allowing the Lady Bears to take a commanding first-half lead.
Pacing the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard was Kate Palo, who finished with a team-high seven points.
