CONYERS - The Ola wrestling squad proved why it's ranked among the top 10 in state after not allowing a single point to either Salem or Norcross on Wednesday evening at Salem High School.
Ranked No. 6 in the Georgia Coaches Wrestling Poll, Ola first pinned Norcross 77-0 before topping Salem 73-0. However, before Ola shut out Salem, the Seminoles broke even with Norcross 40-40. Salem had its strongest outing of the season despite the team's youth and inexperience, as well as several injuries. "I thought overall we looked pretty decent," Salem coach Tim Owens said. "That's the best we've wrestled lately, especially compared to how we've wrestled. I'm proud of the way we looked. We didn't give up. We lost matches, but we never gave up; we were always working to be in the match." For Salem, the match was the last until the area dual championships beginning Friday at Clarke Central. "It's going to be real hard for us because we're giving up three weight classes," Owens said. "I don't have a 12, a 25 or a 71 right now. We're already starting the match 18 points down, so that makes life a little hard." Jason Murdock can be reached at jason.murdock@rockdalecitizen.com.More like this story
