COVINGTON - The National Guard Armory in Covington will hold an open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday to give the community a chance to show its appreciation for the soldiers based there, who will soon be deploying to Afghanistan.
"It would be a great time for the community to come show their support. The soldiers and some of their family members will be there. This is their last drill weekend before deployment," said Kim Schroeder, family readiness coordinator for the unit.
The soldiers of Company B 1-121st Infantry of the National Guard's 48th Brigade will leave for training at Fort Polk in Louisiana in mid-January. They are expected to return home for several days and then head to Camp Shelby in Mississippi, and deploy from there to Afghanistan in March, according to Schroeder.
The soldiers are part of a contingent of 7,000 troops from the 48th and 53rd Brigade Combat Teams that will help train Afghan National Security Forces.
Sunday's open house will include a hot dog lunch and a weapons exhibit. It will also be an opportunity for the public to learn more about Operation Patriots Call, a movement to get businesses, individuals and organizations to provide free services and assistance to families of deployed troops.
The Armory is located at 4124 Carroll St. S.W. For more information, call 770-784-2482.
