MONROE - All three singles players and Newton's No. 2 doubles provided the Lady Rams with a season-opening win defeating Monroe Area 4-1 Monday.
No. 1 singles player Holly Springer shutout her opponent with an 8-0 win before Christine Augusta (No. 2) and Desiree Hines (No. 3) won their matches 8-5 and 8-2. "Holly Springer performed as a top singles player is expected and set the tone for the rest of the team," Newton coach Michael Bryan said. "Desiree Hines played well for her first varsity match." Also providing Newton with a win (8-5) were Melissa Briceno and India Green at No. 2 doubles. "Overall, I was happy for a first match. The girls were a little tentative at first, but settled down and played well for the most part," Bryan said. "Our biggest challenge right now for the team is finding the right combination in our doubles lineup."More like this story
