COVINGTON - The Newton County Historical Society will meet on Feb. 19 in the community room at the Newton County Library. There will be a brief membership meeting at 6:45 p.m. with a special program to follow at 7 p.m.
The Historical Society will welcome George Lonberger, instructor of geography at Georgia Perimeter College, as the featured speaker.
Lonberger's presentation will trace some of the occupational, family and religious characteristics of Newton County's 19th century population through an examination of its many headstones. It will also clarify the origins and meanings of the symbols and words found in a sampling of headstones that have been found by Lonberger's students.
The public is invited to attend. Membership material will be available for those who are interested in joining the Historical Society. For more information, call 770-786-9557.
