Peter Yates, a three-time wrestling state champion at Salem, has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after helping Virginia Tech earn two straight victories and take over sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Last Saturday, Yates beat Virginia's Peter Ferrara 9-3 at 149 pounds to help wrap up the Hokies' 21-12 victory. On Sunday, Yates secured an early takedown that proved to be the difference in his 4-3 upset win over North Carolina's Nick Stabile, who is ranked No. 15 in the country. The Hokies improved to 17-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with a 19-15 win over the Tar Heels.
Yates, who is ranked No. 20 in the county at 149 pounds, is now 26-7 as a freshman. He is one of 10 Virginia Tech wrestlers that have 19 or more wins this season.
Chandler selected to preseason All-PeachBelt team
Former Eastside standout pitcher Mandy Chandler has been named to the Peach Belt Preseason All-Conference Team in softball.
The Georgia College and State University senior was an preseason choice after posting a 25-9 record last season with a 0.98 ERA and 311 strikeouts in 2362/3 innings of work.
Chandler currently ranks sixth all-time in the PBAC with 80 victories. She is also third in strikeouts in league history after pacing the PBAC in strikeouts last season.
Burtts leads Lady Lions to top of standings
Former Rockdale star Angelique Burtts fired in a game-high 26 points to lead East Mississippi Community College to a first-place tie in the MACJC North Division standings with an 80-61 victory over Itawamba Community College on Thursday.
Burtts scored 14 points in the first half to help the Lady Lions open up a nine-point halftime advantage. She finished the game, hitting 11 of 17 shots.
Last week, Burtts, who has signed with Georgia State, registered her fifth double-double in her last nine games with 22 points and a season-high 19 rebounds in a 93-92 double overtime win over Northwest Mississippi.
Crafts hits clutch shot for LaGrange
With 42 seconds left in the second half, Heritage product Blake Craft hit a 3-pointer to tie LaGrange College's game with Rust College on Jan. 26.
However, the Panthers lost in the final seconds 65-63.
Craft tallied six total points and added three rebounds for LaGrange in the contest.
May pulls down eight boards for South Carolina
Heritage's Jewel May collected a team-high eight rebounds in South Carolina's 61-47 loss at Kentucky on Feb. 5.
May finished with three offensive and five defensive boards. She also scored two points in 21 minutes.
Hurt helps lead VCU to 13th straight home victory
Former Salem standout Courtney Hurt tallied four points as Virginia Commonwealth notched its 13th straight home victory with an 83-58 victory over Hofstra.
Hurt also had six rebounds in 10 minutes of playing time.
