Teen remembered<br/> RCSO tracing gun used in shooting of 17-year-old

CONYERS - The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office is tracing the gun used in the accidental shooting death of a Newton High School senior through the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Sgt. Jodi Shupe, spokeswoman with the RCSO, said the 16-year-old accused of shooting T.J. Dorsey, 17, said that the gun was his and he traded another gun for it a week earlier.

"We are doing an ATF trace on the gun to see who the original owner information returns back to," Shupe said.

According to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, four males - all 18 years of age and younger - were traveling back from Club Fusion, a nightclub in Midtown Atlanta, on Interstate 20 and had just crossed into Rockdale County from DeKalb County when a 16-year-old rear-seat passenger fired a 9mm gun he was holding. The juvenile told authorities he believed the safety had been engaged and did not intend to shoot the weapon.

The 16-year-old was charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession of a pistol by a person under the age of 18 and reckless conduct. Juvenile Court Judge William Schneider also added a curfew violation charge to the boy. The 16-year-old is being held at the Gwinnett County Juvenile Detention Center.
