The familiar sound of the bell ringing to solicit donations for the Salvation Army's kettle fills the air recently at the Covington Wal-Mart. It was the first day on the job for bell-ringer Khristie Bowman, who cheerfully reminded busy shoppers to help the less fortunate, especially during the holiday season.
Crowder gets life after plea
COVINGTON -- Darrell Antonio Crowder has pleaded guilty to malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the 2008 murder of his estranged wife, according to Assistant District Attorney Melanie Bell. His case was set for trial Monday in Newton County Superior Court.

COVINGTON -- A 12-year-old boy is dead following an incident Friday night in which he and his 13-year-old brother were playing with a gun, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
NCSO to hold bike ride for holiday toys
COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office is continuing a tradition it began 11 years ago with a motorcycle ride Saturday. The event is designed to raise funds and collect toys for the less fortunate children of Newton County.
Miracle League continues to raise funds
COVINGTON -- Efforts are still under way to build a Miracle League Field in Newton County.Funds are being raised to pay for construction documents. The cost for that will be approximately $85,000; so far, about $58,000 has been raised, according to Tamara Richardson, a consultant who is applying for grants and heading up marketing efforts for the field.
Oxford starts demolition of old city hall building
OXFORD -- The city of Oxford is taking one of its first visible steps toward renewing its city center.On Monday, contractors began the demolition of the Oxford City Hall building on West Clark Street to make way for the new Oxford Community Center and City Hall. This comes about a month after conducting some site work and clearing for the project.
YMCA holding tryouts for soccer team
COVINGTON -- The Covington YMCA Academy/Select Soccer Program, Covington Galaxy, will hold tryouts at 10 a.m. Saturday for players interested in a more competitive environment. Tryouts will be held at the Covington YMCA Outdoor Center and are open to the public. Tryouts are for boys ages 7-13 and girls ages 7-15.
