COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the discovery of a body in a burned out vehicle in western Newton County on Wednesday night.
According to NCSO spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell, deputies and Newton County Fire Service firefighters were called to McGiboney Lane off Spring Road to the scene of a vehicle fire around 10:45 p.m.
"When Deputies and Newton County firefighters arrived they located the burning vehicle on some vacant property off McGiboney Lane. As the fire was being extinguished, authorities located the unidentified remains of a body in the charred vehicle," Mitchell said.
Mitchell said no further information was being released at this time.
"This is an active investigation and more information may be released when it is available," he said.
