COVINGTON -- The Social Security Administration is opening a new office in Covington to hold hearings on benefit disputes.
The building will be located on Covington Bypass on 3.5 acres across from Indian Creek Golf Course, just down the road from the Covington branch office, which will remain in operation for general business.
Realtor Stan Bourne with Prudential Colony Realty said a contract on the property closed this week and the developer is going through the permitting process with the county in order to begin construction.
The office will be used to conduct hearings when individuals appeal decisions regarding Social Security and supplemental security income benefits.
Patti Patterson, regional communications director for the Social Security Administration, said there are three such offices in Georgia, but none located within metro Atlanta, which is why Covington was chosen as the location for the new site.
The office is slated to open in the summer, she said.
Patterson said she could not provide the total employee count, but added there will be at least nine judges as well as a support staff.
The building will be 3,200 square feet, equally divided between the two floors, Blount said.
The Social Security office will be located on the top floor, with room available for two additional tenants on the first floor, which will likely also be used as office space, Blount said.
"This is going to be bringing business and some employees to the city and to the county ... It's a plus in this economic period, really," he said.
