COVINGTON -- Four Alcovy High School students remain hospitalized following a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 4 p.m. Wednesday following their dismissal from school, according to Georgia State Patrol Post 46 Trooper Shaun Browder.
The crash occurred on Picket Bridge Road, a dirt road near Ga. Highway 36.
Browder said the four were traveling westbound in a Ford F-150 extended cab pickup, with the 16-year-old driver and one passenger in the front and two passengers in the rear.
"They were traveling at a high rate of speed and came over the crest of a hill, lost control of the truck, struck an embankment and continued west on the north shoulder of the roadway," Browder said. "They struck a pine tree, rotated around and the vehicle came to a rest on the north shoulder and caught on fire."
Browder said two of the trucks occupants were outside the vehicle when people who heard the crash arrived at the scene. Those people broke out the truck windows and pulled the other two from the flaming vehicle. He said it had not been determined if the two who were already out of the vehicle had been ejected.
All four occupants were seriously injured and one remains in critical condition with head injuries. Two were airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center and two were transported by ground ambulance to the same hospital.
Browder said charges were pending in the crash based on the outcome of the investigation being conducted by the GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
