COVINGTON -- The Covington YMCA Academy/Select Soccer Program, Covington Galaxy, will hold tryouts at 10 a.m. Saturday for players interested in a more competitive environment. Tryouts will be held at the Covington YMCA Outdoor Center and are open to the public. Tryouts are for boys ages 7-13 and girls ages 7-15.
The Covington Galaxy Team of skilled soccer players has grown from 10 players in 2006 to more than 80 in the 2009 fall season. This program allows players to be exposed to a more rigorous training than the YMCA Recreational Leagues and is targeted toward those hoping to improve their skill level to the point of playing high school or college soccer.
Academy/Select teams are coached entirely by state- and/or nationally licensed coaches. With guidance and more practice time with these coaches, players see rapid improvement in skills and become overall better balanced soccer players.
"Since these teams travel, this program gives players the opportunity to see how their skills compare to other top players in surrounding communities," YMCA Select Volunteer Coach Philip Stephenson said. "It provides great exposure for players aspiring to continue play throughout their lives."
With its newly developed Covington YMCA Outdoor Center, the YMCA plans to grow this and many other sports programs to meet the needs of the community. The YMCA's recreational league for ages 3-14 will begin registering for the spring season Jan. 4.
