NCSO to hold bike ride for holiday toys

COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office is continuing a tradition it began 11 years ago with a motorcycle ride Saturday. The event is designed to raise funds and collect toys for the less fortunate children of Newton County.

According to Cpl. Anthony Washington, the agency has selected 10 to 15 families to assist.

"We try to serve and fulfill their wish list if possible," Washington said.

Any surplus toys collected at the event will go to the Newton County Department of Family and Children Services for distribution. Also, he said any family in need of toys can apply at the NCSO by completing an application for consideration.

Washington said registration would begin at 10 a.m. in the Kmart parking lot at U.S. Highway 278 and Turner Lake Road.

"Kickstands go up at 11:30," he said, adding that the ride, escorted by motorcyclists with the NCSO, will travel through the countryside of Newton County.

The fee is $10 plus an unwrapped toy. Washington said all donations toward the effort would be welcomed.

"Also, any businesses who might care to make donations of toys or gift cards would certainly be appreciated," he said.
