COVINGTON -- A 12-year-old boy is dead following an incident Friday night in which he and his 13-year-old brother were playing with a gun, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
NCSO Spokesman Lt. Tyrone Oliver said the two were alone in the home on Fox Meadow Drive about 6:30 p.m. when deputies were called to the house.
"Upon arrival deputies noticed a 12-year-old male had suffered an apparent gunshot wound," Oliver said in a press release. "The male was transported to Newton Medical Center where he later died of his injuries."
Oliver declined to release any details as to the type of gun used in the shooting. The press release states the siblings "found a gun inside the residence."
"We're still looking into this and will not release anything about the type of gun. The investigation is still ongoing and charges may be pending," he said, also declining to say who would be charged in the matter should the investigation go in that direction.
Oliver also declined to say where the child was struck by the bullet or bullets.
In other crime news, the Walton County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body this weekend in a wooded area on Clegg Farm Road near Social Circle.
Chief Deputy Bruce Wright said Monday that a deer hunter found the body sometime about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The WCSO was unwilling to release any more information until after the autopsy has been completed today.
"We have no idea the cause of death at this point. I don't want to go so far as to say it's a homicide at this point," Wright said, also declining to say whether the body was a man or woman.
He declined to provide any further details about the identity of the body, which was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab. John Bankhead, spokesman for the GBI, said the GBI assisted the sheriff's office with the crime scene, but the investigation is headed by the WCSO.
