COVINGTON - The work of area artists will be showcased throughout the month of September at Southern Heartland Gallery during the second annual Artful Harvest exhibit.
The exhibit will run Friday to Sept. 28 at the gallery, located at 1132 Monticello St., and will feature a variety of works by Georgia artists. It is free and open to the public.
Last year's event was so popular that entries had to be turned away because there wasn't enough space at the Newton County Library, where the exhibit was housed. This year, guild members have agreed to give up their spaces at the gallery for the event.
"This is enabling us to accept more artists and larger pieces of art and we're really excited," said Susan Wahl, finance chair for Southern Heartland Arts Inc.
Artists will be judged in two categories: one-dimensional work, including oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media and collage; and three-dimensional work, including sculpture, turned wood, pottery, free form clay, carvings, glass, gourds and jewelry.
It's not too late to participate in the show. Artists can still be featured by registering and bringing their artwork to the gallery between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday.
Artful Harvest will be open during the gallery's regular hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
"There's going to be a great variety of art. It will all be local Georgia art, but not just our own little guild here in Newton County," Wahl said.
Southern Heartland Gallery will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a community party on Sept. 12. The public can come by for free birthday cake. Artists will also be on hand for demonstrations, to create sidewalk chalk art and for face painting.
