COVINGTON - Good news for golfers: Soon you'll be able to play the game you love and contribute to a good cause at the same time.

Throughout the month of September, The Oaks Course, located at 11240 Brown Bridge Road in Covington, is donating $1 for every game of golf played to the proposed Miracle League Park.

The first phase of the park will be a Miracle Field for special-needs children.

The Oaks owner Dick Schulz is on the fundraising committee for the project.

September is one of the busiest months for the course, he said.

"The more golfers we get out there, hopefully the sooner we will get the field started," he said, adding that he also plans to have a donation jar for those who'd like to contribute more.

Schulz is hoping the owners of other golf courses will do something similar, estimating that at least 10,000 rounds of golf are played locally during the month of September.

Thus far, the fundraising committee has raised between $15,000 and $20,000, he said, adding that it will likely cost between $30,000 and $60,000 to have plans drawn up for the project.

The Miracle Field will be located in City Pond Park west of the tennis complex.

The Newton County Recreation Commission, which is heading up the project, also plans to build two more fields for T-league and Pee Wee play.

The park will be built in phases with the Miracle Field to be completed first, Recreation Commission Director Tommy Hailey previously said.

The project will be heavily reliant on donations but may also receive public funding, he said.
