Eastside girls, Newton boys get wins at cross country meet
COVINGTON - The Eastside girls took the top three spots while the Newton boys had four runners finish in the top seven to win a quad-meet with Salem and Alcovy Tuesday. In the girls meet, Eastside scored 16 points to win the meet followed by Alcovy (47). Neither Newton nor Salem had enough girls to make up a team. Eastside's Alle Haynie took the top spot with a time of 25 minutes, 34 seconds. Finishing in the top five were Eastside's Blakley Smith (25:50), Eastside's Naomi Denby (26:04), Newton's Desiree Hines (26:54) and Newton's Ana Carver (26:56). On the boys side, Newton was the top team with 34 points with Alcovy (44), Eastside (69) and Salem (114) following. Alcovy's Dominique Brown posted the fastest boys time running the course in 19:08. Two seconds behind Brown was Salem's Dontavius Wright followed by Newton's Tyler Ransom (19:33), Alcovy's Damon Ivey (19:39), Newton's Jason Moffitt (19:42) and Newton's Jamal Green (19:46). Lady Rams shut out Stephenson COVINGTON - Newton's softball team got behind pitcher Holly Springer in the 15-0 win over Region 2-AAAAA rival Stephenson Tuesday. Springer helped the Lady Rams improve to 5-1 on the season, 1-0 in region play, as she collected the no-hitter win with eight strikeouts. Newton hosts Parkview today at 5 p.m. at Turner Lake Complex.More like this story
