More than 120 youths participate in fishing derby

SOCIAL CIRCLE - The 13th annual Metro Atlanta Hawg Hunters Fishing Derby at the Department of Natural Resources Fishery in Social Circle has been officially proclaimed a success. More than 120 youngsters took part in the event with more than 65 adult volunteers assisting them as they dipped their hooks into the lake.

Event organizer Anthony Shy said about 90 percent of the kids caught a fish and a total of 367 fish were caught and released during the event.

Included in the day was a fishing contest, a big fish contest, a casting contest and a back-to-school event where there were over 120 packages of school supplies given out. Also given out were 36 rod-and-reel combos, tackle boxes, hats,

T-shirts and Bass Pro Shop gift cards. Lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs was served to the hungry fishermen.

"The age group range was from 3 years old to 12 years old in the girls group with 30 females taking part," Shy said in a printed press release. "The boys ages range from 6 to 15 years old with 90 males participating. Thirty-five percent were first-time fishermen.
