COVINGTON - Those mulling over a run for public office have a month to make up their minds: Qualifying for the Nov. 3 Municipal Election takes place Aug. 31-Sept. 4.
The councils governing the cities of Covington, Oxford, Porterdale and Mansfield and the town of Newborn all have seats up for election. Qualifying fees are 3 percent of the elected official's annual salary.
In Covington, Council Post 1, East Ward, currently held by John Howard; Council Post 2, West Ward, held by Hawnethia Williams; and Council Post 3, West Ward, held by Ocie Franklin, are on the ballot.
The qualifying fee is $180. Qualifying will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31 though Sept. 4 at the Newton County Board of Elections and Registration office, located in the Newton County Administration at 1113 Usher St.
Oxford also has three posts up for election: Post 4, held by Emily Patterson; Post 5, held by James Windham; and Post 6, held by Terry Smith.
Qualifying will take place at City Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 31 - Sept. 3 and will close at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 4. Oxford City Hall is located at 110 West Clark St.
The qualifying fee is $75.
In Mansfield, qualifying will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day during qualifying week, except for Wednesday, at Mansfield City Hall, located at 3146 Ga. Hwy. 11 South.
Council posts 3, 4 and 5, held by Lyra Cocchi, Larry Haigwood and Larry Cummins, are open.
The qualifying fee is $18.
The entire Newborn Town Council is up for election, including the mayor's seat.
Beginning this year, the town is adopting staggered terms. To get on track with that schedule, whoever is elected to council posts 1 and 2 will serve two-year terms, while council posts 3 and 4 will serve four-year terms.
Qualifying fees are $30 for mayor and $25 for council posts. Qualifying will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Newborn Town Hall at 4346 Ga. Hwy. 142.
The city clerk in Porterdale said she did not have information on qualifying at this time. City Manager Tom Fox was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
Qualifiers in all municipalities will be required to fill out a notice of candidacy and should bring a photo ID.
