Moore had cancer in her left breast and decided to go ahead and have a double mastectomy done. Both women work at the East Newton Elementary School cafeteria. The cancer bag has artwork on it from Moore's 7-year-old grandson, Logan Turner, and she is very proud of that. Newton County's Relay for Life kicked off Friday evening at the Church at Covington on Ga. Highway 142, a new venue for the event that has been held at Sharp Stadium in years past. The fundraising event featured a survivor reception at 5 p.m., the Relay kickoff (led by a survivor lap) at 7 p.m., and, at 10 p.m., luminary ceremonies to honor cancer survivors and those who have died from the disease. During the relay, team members take turns walking around a track, keeping the pace all night until the next morning when closing ceremonies take place about 7 a.m. Newton's goal this year is roughly $302,000. All money raised goes to the American Cancer Society for cancer research, detection, prevention, education and advocacy.
