The Heritage soccer squads will try to take advantage of home-field advantage tonight in Class AAAA playoffs, while the Newton girls will shoot for a road win in Class AAAAA competition.
Dalton at Heritage girls The Lady Patriots (9-4-4) are looking to end a four-game postseason losing streak against the Lady Catamounts (12-4-1) at 5:30 p.m. at Evans Memorial Stadium. The Heritage girls haven't won a playoff game since a 15-0 decision over Stone Mountain in the first round of the 2004 Class AAAA playoffs. Last year, the Lady Patriots fell 4-1 to Marist in the opening round. Heritage enters the game ranked No. 7 in Class AAAA. However, the Lady Patriots are winless in their last three games, going 0-2-1. Prior to that, the Heritage girls had won six of their last seven games en route to claiming the No. 2 seed in Area 8-AAAA. Dalton finished third in Area 7-AAAA after beating Woodland-Bartow 4-3 in penalty kicks. Hillgrove at Heritage boys The Patriots (10-3) should get a stern test from the Hawks (13-3-1) in the nightcap at Evans Memorial Stadium, starting at 7:30 p.m. Hillgrove has won 11 of its last 12 matches. Its only loss over that stretch was a 3-2 overtime setback to Dalton on April 13. The Hawks are ranked No. 8 in Class AAAA. Heritage is on a roll of its own with an eight-game winning streak under the guidance of first-year coach Brandon Stewart. The Patriots have outscored their opponents 21-3 during that span. Last year, Heritage fell 2-0 in the first round of the state tournament to eventual state champion Lakeside-DeKalb. Newton girls at Warner Robins The Lady Rams (6-7) are looking to secure a road win against the Lady Demons (13-2-1) at 5 p.m. The Newton girls have earned five straight Class AAAAA state playoff berths, but they've only made it out of the first round once after beating Windsor Forest in penalty kicks in 2007. Last year, the Lady Rams fell 14-0 at East Coweta in the first round. Warner Robins has won 11 of its 12 games.More like this story
