COVINGTON - The Alcovy boys golf team shaved 36 strokes on the back nine at Indian Creek Golf Club to take runner-up in the Region 4-AAAA tournament and earn a trip to the Class AAAA state tournament.
As a team, the boys played the front side shooting 211 before shooting 175 on the back nine. "They played well on the back," Alcovy coach Chris Newsham said. "It was a solid effort considering it was not looking good at the turn. I'm pleased with the way they stuck at it." Matt Moore's 77 was two off the pace to take low medalist. Ola's Cory Griffin had the lowest round, shooting 75. Posting for Alcovy with Moore were Patrick McNally (95), Drake Potts (108) and Travis Aiken (116). Playing but not scoring were Tyler Azar (117) and Jake Martin (118). Ola took the region championship, posting 333, 63 strokes better than Alcovy's second place 396. Dutchtown finished third with a score of 426 followed by Griffin (497), North Clayton (519) and Stockbridge (550). The Tigers will play at the state tournament May 4 at Nob North Golf Club in Cohutta.More like this story
