Staff Photo: Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith Newton County authorities gathered on the banks of Factory Shoals as they searched for a woman who apparently drowned Monday morning when she slipped into the rushing rapids at the park located off Ga. Highway 36. "The water is moving rapidly and up pretty high because of the recent rains," Newton County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Mark Mitchell said. Members of the Newton County Dive Team braved the rapidly rushing water in an effort to locate the woman's body, which was was recovered late Monday afternoon. "They were able to get the body out of the water and the incident is under investigation to see what actually occurred," Mitchell said. He said the woman, described as being in her mid-30s, was with friends when she fell into the water about 11 a.m. At press time the name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. In addition to personnel from the sheriff's office and the dive team, members of the Newton County Fire Service, Newton County Emergency Management, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, emergency medical personnel and other emergency responders were at the scene.
