Soccer's second season starts for the local squads tonight with a pair of Class AAAA girls first-round playoff games.
The Salem and Alcovy girls will be the first of seven local squads in action this week.
On Wednesday, the Heritage girls and boys will play in their Class AAAA first-round games, while the Newton girls will see action in Class AAAAA.
The Eastside girls play in the Class AAA opening round Thursday. The Eastside boys will open Friday.
Woodland-Bartow at Salem
The Lady Seminoles (15-3) will begin their quest for a state title tonight against the Lady Wildcats (9-8).
Salem has won seven straight games and captured its fourth straight Area 8-AAAA title this spring. Last year, Salem advanced to the Class AAAA semifinals before falling to Marist 1-0 on a goal in the game's final minute.
The Lady Seminoles enter tonight's game ranked No. 3 in the state. Salem's three losses this season have come against Class AAAAA competition.
Woodland finished fourth in Region 7-AAAA after falling to Dalton in penalty kicks.
Tonight's game will be the first postseason contest played at Seminole Stadium.
Alcovy at Lakeside-Evans
The Lady Tigers (9-7) are making their own history tonight, playing in their first state playoff game against the Lady Panthers (12-1-1).
Lakeside enters the game ranked No. 10 in Class AAAA. The Lady Panthers' only loss this season came against Peachtree Ridge (5-0). They also tied 1-1 with Heritage.
Alcovy made a remarkable turnaround this season to claim the No. 4 playoff seed in Area 4-AAAA.
The Lady Tigers have scored 49 goals this season after tallying only nine last year. Defensively, Alcovy has also shown a vast improvement this season, giving up only 28 goals after surrendering 86 last season.
