Volunteers sought for Cleanup day
KCNB needs help for environmental work day

COVINGTON - Keep Covington-Newton Beautiful is seeking volunteers for the local Great American Cleanup, set for Saturday, April 25.

Participants will take to the streets to pick up litter along the rights of way and sidewalks.

Anyone willing to take part is asked to meet at 8 a.m. at the Kroger in Newton Plaza on U.S. Highway 278 or the Kroger on Salem Road the day of the event.

"This is a great opportunity for our citizens to join thousands of other volunteers from across America in showing pride in our country by keeping it clean. The slogan for this year, 'Green Starts Here,' is certainly appropriate as we demonstrate personal responsibility in cleaning up our community," said KCNB Director Connie Waller.

Volunteers are asked to wear orange safety vests, which will be available at the kickoff sites. KCNB will also provide trash bags.

Individuals or groups are welcome to participate and KCNB encourages community leaders to organize civic club, business, church, neighborhood and school teams for the event or for large-scale projects at their own sites.

Those who can't participate on April 25 can pick another day to contribute.

The purpose of the Great American Cleanup is to empower citizens to become involved in cleaning up and beautifying their surroundings through activities such as picking up litter, recycling programs, painting and repairing buildings and planting flowers and trees.

The national event, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, runs from March 1- May 31.
