SOCIAL CIRCLE - Social Circle is doing a bit of spring cleaning this weekend.
At 8 a.m. Saturday, community members are invited to clean up parts of the city during the biannual City Wide Cleanup.
The day will start in the community room at City Hall, located at 138 E. Hightower Trail in Social Circle, with a light sausage biscuit breakfast and entertainment provided by band students from Social Circle City Schools.
Afterward, guests will collect their supplies - litter grabbers, bags, safety vests and gloves - and head off to an assigned street or area of town to clean.
"It's always a lot of fun; it's very community based," said Lindsey Wood, executive director of Social Circle Better Home Town. "A lot of people who come out know each other, so it's very friendly and comforting."
She said families, church groups, area neighborhoods, the Social Circle Boys and Girls Club and other community organizations and groups often attend the event.
"Anybody can come out," Wood said, adding that kid-friendly cleanup areas also are set up. "They don't even have to be Social Circle residents. Anybody who is willing to come out, we will have them."
Even when the groups are finished cleaning their areas - often between 11 a.m. and noon - they still feel good about what they just did to help their community, she said.
"People always come back energized," she said. "And the next week, they see the town clean and it motivates them for the next one."
This is the third annual event, which is generally held in the spring and fall.
It was started by Mayor Jim Burgess' wife, Madeline, and the Clean City Social Circle Committee as a beautification project and is held in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup with the help of Keep Walton Beautiful.
Last year, about 100 individuals came out to the cleanups and more are expected this year because of the city growth and pleasant weather.
"It's supposed to be a clear day, so we're hoping for a good turnout," Wood said. "Last year, it was a little rainy, but we had people out there in rain coats. It's rain or shine."
Those who are not able to make Saturday's event are encouraged to stop by the city visitor's center, located at 129 E. Hightower Trail, today to pick up gear and sign up to clean a community street or section at another time.
