COVINGTON - A suspect has been arrested in connection with the Sunday evening shooting of a resident at the Summerset apartment complex off Salem Road.
According to Lt. Mark Mitchell of the Newton County Sheriff's Office, Sean Michael Haughton, 23, 105 Creek Way, Covington, has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident that left a 21-year-old man wounded in the leg.
"Investigators were able to follow leads, and through witness statements and identification were able to positively ID him as being the suspect in connection with this," Mitchell said.
Haughton faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of arms by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, commission of a crime by a convicted felon through the use of a firearm, armed robbery and theft by receiving stolen property.
Mitchell said it remains unclear if there was a prior connection between the suspect and the victim.
"It appears from statements and evidence we obtained that Mr. Haughton had contact with the victim over at Summerset apartments and they got into an altercation and the victim was shot," Mitchell said.
The armed robbery charge stems from the victim's allegation that Haughton stole a hand-held game system from him, Mitchell added.
The victim was taken to an Atlanta area hospital for observation. Mitchell said earlier it did not appear that the victim's wound was life-threatening.
