COVINGTON - Deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's Office were called to the Summerset apartment complex off Salem Road on Sunday evening after a man was shot in the leg.
Lt. Mark Mitchell said many details of the incident, which was reported around 6 p.m., remain under investigation. "We discovered a victim, a male, had been shot," Mitchell said. "Exactly how he was shot, whether he was inside his residence or not, that is under investigation." Mitchell said the victim, whose age was not available at press time, sustained a single gunshot to the leg and was taken to an Atlanta area hospital for observation. "I don't think his injuries are life-threatening, but that was done as a precaution," Mitchell said. The NCSO is working to determine what led to the shooting and how many suspects may have been involved. "We know that there was a suspect seen fleeing the area, but we are trying to determine if there is going to be a single suspect or multiple suspects," he said. Initial information indicates that the shooting may have been the result of an armed robbery attempt, but Mitchell said investigators are still working to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.More like this story
