CONYERS - The Heritage volleyball squad finished second in the silver bracket, falling to Eagle's Landing Christian Academy during the annual Conyers Classic AmPest Spike Fest on Saturday.
Thirty-six teams competed in the event, which was held at Heritage, Salem, Davis Middle, Woodland and Eagle's Landing.
"Overall, I was happy with our play for the weekend," Heritage coach David Buddenbaum said. "(The) tournament went well. We had great attendance and I think the teams enjoyed their experience."
Whitewater took gold while Calvary was the bronze winner.
Heritage (20-16 overall, 7-1 Area 8S-AAAA), which hosted the tournament, won five of seven matches, topping Ola, Lee County, East Coweta, North Oconee and Chapel Hill.
The two losses came against Whitewater 25-18, 25-18, followed by Eagle's Landing Christian Academy 25-18, 25-21.
"Our loss to Eagle's Landing wasn't what I wanted but we did play well in parts," Buddenbaum said. "I knew (Whitewater) was the best team in the tournament coming in, so I wasn't too disappointed in the loss to them. We could have played more aggressive and played better, but it wasn't too bad."
Rockdale won two of its five matches in pool C, defeating Mt. Zion 25-17, 27-25 and then Salem.
In pool D, Salem dropped two other matches to Dutchtown and Houston County before bowing out of the tournament.
Alcovy, competing in pool E, dropped a pair of matches to Morgan County and Northgate before beating East Hall (twice). However, Eagle's Landing upended Alcovy to advance in the bronze bracket.
In pool G, Newton lost three of its four matches. The first deficit came against Eagle's Landing in three games 25-20, 11-25, 25-21.
But Newton bounced back during the second match, topping Warner Robins 25-19, 25-21 before falling to Chapel Hill in three games 25-16, 23-25, 25-19.
Newnan overcame Newton in the final match 25-11, 25-11.
"I'd like to thank all the host schools, including AmPest Control for helping sponsor the tournament," Buddenbaum said.
