Harvest Weekend comes to Covington

COVINGTON - Harvest Weekend, downtown Covington's annual celebration of the beginning of fall, takes place this weekend.

"Harvest Weekend has something for everyone. ... It is a weekend for the young and the not-so-young to come downtown and be with their friends and neighbors," Main Street Covington Director Josephine Kelly said. "The Square will be decked out in yellow chrysanthemums, which has become a signature of the Harvest Weekend and marks the beginning of the fall season in downtown Covington."

The event kicks off Friday with merchants in the downtown offering special promotions and sidewalk sales.

The popular Mutt Show sponsored by the Newton County Humane Society will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday on the Square. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Dogs will be judged in several categories, including Most Beautiful, Most Handsome, Look-A-Like, Best Trick and Best Dressed. Ribbons will be awarded to all the winners.

The entrance fee is a donation to the Humane Society. Dog owners must be at least 18 years old or, if under age, accompanied by an adult.

All dogs should be leashed and the Humane Society asks that owners not bring aggressive dogs to the show.
