County commissioners are elected to four-year terms and must reside in the district they represent. Commissioners set the county's annual budget and millage rate, which determines property tax assessed in the county. They vote on various issues affecting the county, including rezonings, and oversee certain functions of county government.
The position carries a starting salary of $18,980, with annual adjustments for cost of living, years served and other considerations. Commissioners also appoint members of various boards and committees, including the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Newton County Recreation Commission and the Newton County Library Board.More like this story
