COVINGTON - The American Legion Women's Auxiliary is teaming with Operation Sandbox to host a festival to support the troops in November, and they're asking local businesses, organizations, churches and other groups to be vendors.
The festival will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 1, on the Square in downtown Covington. Proceeds will benefit Operation Sandbox, a non-profit organization that sends supplies to troops deployed overseas. Vendors are required to make a $50 donation to Operation Sandbox and may decide whether to donate or keep proceeds from any sales, said Lura Whitaker, publicity chair for the event. Most of the money raised will be used to pay for postage, which costs $9 per box mailed out by Operation Sandbox, Whitaker said. "Every penny goes back to the troops," she said. Anyone interested in being a vendor should call Ruth Parham at 770-786-8993 or Debra Hamby at 770-787-1109. At the event, which will also include musical entertainment and an old-time car show, the public will be asked to bring supplies that will be mailed to the troops.
