Sophomore Darius Mathis is making a big impact at wide receiver this season for Alabama State.
The former Salem quarterback leads the Hornets in receiving after two games with 11 catches for 123 yards and one touchdown.
Mathis scored his touchdown on a 30-yard reception in Alabama State's 28-7 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 6. He had five catches for 58 yards in that game.
In the Hornets' opener against Florida A&M, Mathis had six receptions for 65 yards.
Alabama State lost to UAB 45-10 on Saturday.
Local duo shines for Central Florida
He's playing under a different name, but a former Salem standout is still a key component of Central Florida's defensive line.
Torrell Troup, who played under the name of Torrell Johnson with the Seminoles, has five total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry in the Golden Knights' first two games.
His UCF teammate, linebacker Chance Henderson, who played at Heritage, has 12 total tackles (nine solo and three assists) and one quarterback hurry.
Benefield makes first start at Georgia Southern
Junior linebacker Terrione Benefield made his first start of the season in Georgia Southern's 34-27 overtime victory over Northeastern last week.
The Heritage product recorded six total tackles (three solo and three assists) for the Eagles.
He also had four tackles in Georgia Southern's 34-20 win against Austin-Peay on Sept. 6.
Williams scores TD in Western Carolina debut
After transferring from Central Florida, former Salem standout Jayson Williams is making his mark at Western Carolina.
The junior running back scored a touchdown on a 24-yard run in his debut with the Catamounts against Shorter College on Aug. 28.
Williams finished the 35-0 victory with a team-high 91 yards rushing on 14 carries. He also had one pass reception for 10 yards.
In three games, the junior has 19 carries for 98 yards and three receptions for 32 yards.
Ahonen records interception for Randolph-Macon
Former Salem Seminole Scott Ahonen has recorded one interception, three pass break-ups and one fumble recovery in two games this season for Randolph-Macon.
The senior defensive back has also chalked up seven total tackles for the Yellow Jackets, including two for loss.
Presbyterian's Lamb on all-tournament team
Presbyterian junior defender Rachel Lamb was named to the all-tournament team at the Academy Sports & Outdoors Soccer Tournament, hosted last week by the Lady Blue Hose.
Lamb, a former Salem standout, anchored a Presbyterian defense that surrendered only two goals in the tournament.
Presbyterian defeated UNC-Asheville 5-1 on Wednesday.
Last season, Lamb was the team's co-MVP along with Lytle Cannon.
Turner is North Georgia Player of the Week
Katie Turner, a former Rockdale soccer standout, won the North Georgia College Player of the Week award after leading the Saints to a 2-1 victory against North Alabama.
Turner tallied both goals in the game, the first on a penalty kick and the second a game-winning goal in overtime.
The junior also scored a goal in the Lady Saints' 5-0 victory over Erskine in the season opener.
Turner now has six career goals at North Georgia. She scored one as a sophomore and two as a freshman.
Dingle picks up preseason A-Sun honor
Caitlin Dingle, Rockdale County's all-time leading goal scorer, was selected as the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Last season at Kennesaw State, Dingle led the A-Sun in goal scoring and was a first-team selection on the All-Atlantic Sun Conference team. She was also named the MVP at the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Tournament.
However, Dingle suffered an injury in the season opener. Dingle will likely sit out and redshirt this season.
Wolcott starts strong at Jacksonville State
Soibhan Wolcott is off to a strong start for Kennesaw State this season.
The junior placed fourth in her first race of the season at the Jacksonville State Invitational with a time of 12 minutes, 10 seconds in the two-mile event.
The former Heritage standout then finished 14th on Sept. 5 in the Powerade Invitational at UTC-Chattanooga. Wolcott recorded a time of 12:24.
