Henderson strikes out 16 for Eastside
COVINGTON - Eastside's Amanda Henderson had a season-high 16 strikeouts for the Eastside softball team in a 5-1 win over Hart County Tuesday.
"We hit the ball well as a team and were able to execute with players in scoring position," Eastside coach Heather Wood said.
The Lady Eagles finished the North Oconee Tournament on Saturday with a record of 3-1-1, beating Stephens County (9-0), South Effingham (3-0) and Jackson County (16-3). They lost to East Jackson (1-0) and tied Winder-Barrow (4-4).
Today's game at 5:55 p.m. between No. 4 Eastside (16-4-2, 5-1) and No. 1 Oconee County (14-1-2, 4-1) could be for the top seed in the Region 8-AAA Tournament.
Eastside volleyball records split
JEFFERSON - The Eastside volleyball team split a tri-match Tuesday, beating Jackson County 26-24, 25-22 before losing to Jefferson 25-22, 25-18.
The Lady Eagles trailed Jackson County 23-15 in the first game before Katie Johnston closed the gap to 23-20. After getting the serve back, Gabe Parker took Eastside the rest of the way serving the final six points to get the 26-24 win.
In the second game, Tiffani Hodges recorded eight straight service points to take the lead to 20-12. Jackson County rebounded on its service to make it 20-18, but Eastside was able to close out the victory.
Johnston and Hodges led Eastside in the two matches at the service line with 11 and nine aces, respectively. Defensively, Nia Mullins had three blocks and six tips while Ashley Aycox finished with six digs.
Alcovy run-rules Forest Park
FOREST PARK - The Alcovy softball team took advantage of Forest Park errors as it blanked the Lady Panthers 15-0 Tuesday.
Alcovy pitcher Caitlin Williams had nine strikeouts in four innings, while Amber Melton paced the team offensively, going 3-for-3.
Chiefs to start Thigpen at QB against Falcons
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tyler Thigpen, a second-year pro who set passing records as an All-American for Coastal Carolina, will start at quarterback for the Chiefs on Sunday against Atlanta.
Thigpen came in for Damon Huard on Sunday and hit 14 of 33 passes for 151 yards, one touchdown and one interception in a 23-8 loss to the Oakland Raiders.
