COVINGTON - A man who apparently was not wearing a seat belt was killed in a one-car crash on Kirkland Road in the early morning hours Monday, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
According to Trooper A. Rhodes, a Pontiac G6 left the roadway and struck a mailbox and a utility pole, ejecting the male passenger from the vehicle and killing him. Rhodes refused to release the name of the dead man or the name of the driver who was charged with DUI, not wearing a seat belt and failure to maintain lane. He did say that the driver was 21. Rhodes said the driver was not seriously injured but was transported by ambulance to Newton Medical Center. Following treatment of his injuries, he was taken to the Newton County Detention Center, Rhodes said. A further investigation of the incident is being conducted by the GSP's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
