PORTERDALE - City Council members agreed last week that Porterdale's unique history should have a more prominent display for visitors to the mill village.

Councilwoman Arline Chapman, who said at the Sept. 8 City Council meeting she has been concerned at the lack of historical markers in Porterdale, said there are two that were once on view at Porter Memorial Gym - one that gives the history of the town and another that commemorates the gym. However, since the gym burned two years ago, the markers have been in storage.

At Chapman's urging, the council voted unanimously to reach an agreement with building owner Monty Hill to place the town's historical marker on the brick wall of his building that faces the brick alleyway. Council members agreed to stipulate that the placement is temporary until the marker can be erected on a suitable public building. The marker will be put in place prior to the Porterdale Reunion and Festival on Oct. 4

The other marker commemorating the gym is in need of restoration, Chapman said.

In other news, council members unanimously approved a resolution adopting Newton County's updated multi-jurisdictional solid waste management plan, which includes the proposed expansion of the Newton County Landfill.

All of Newton County's five municipalities are participants in the multi-jurisdictional solid waste plan. The plan is prepared under the guidelines of the state Department of Community Affairs. The Newton County Board of Commissioners approved the plan earlier this month.
