Miss Sweetheart pageant to raise money for Relay for Life

COVINGTON - Registration is under way for the Miss Sweetheart Relay 2009 Pageant, a beauty contest that donates proceeds to the Newton County Relay For Life.

The American Cancer Society's largest fundraiser, Relay For Life is held in April of each year to raise money for cancer research and education.

This is the fifth year Relay participant Beth Bradley has coordinated the pageant to raise money for the event.

Contestants' entry fees, along with admission fees, go to benefit the cause. Last year's event raised more than $4,000, Bradley said.

The pageant will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at Eastside High School.

Those who register by Oct. 1 will pay a discounted entry fee of $60. After Oct. 1, the entry fee is $75.

There are nine competitive categories, divided by age: Baby Miss, from birth to 18 months; Toddler Miss, age 19 months to 35 months; Wee Miss, age 3 to 4 years; Little Miss, age 5 to 6 years; Young Miss, age 7 to 9 years; Pre-Teen Miss, age 10 to 11 years; Teen Miss, age 12 to 13 years; Jr. Miss, age 14 to 16 years; and Miss, age 17 and older.

Winners in each category will receive a crown, trophy and custom-made banner. Special awards will also be given for Most Photogenic, Prettiest Hair, Prettiest Smile and Prettiest Dress in each age division.

Winners will ride in the Covington Christmas Parade and participate in the Relay For Life event.

A Miss Spirit Relay will also be awarded, with prize money going to the winner's Relay team, Bradley said. The Miss Spirit title will be awarded to the contestant that

raises the most money to be donated to Relay for Life.

"The majority (of money raised) stays within the county for county projects and research to find a cure. There are different organizations within the county that help cancer patients," Bradley said.

Entry forms are due by Oct. 15 and checks should be made payable to Relay for Life. For more information on how to obtain an entry form or about the pageant, call Bradley at 770-377-9244 or e-mail her at bbtaz@mindspring.com.

In addition, admission fees will be donated to Relay. Admission for adults is $5 and $2 for students.

An on-site photographer will donate proceeds from each picture package ordered to Relay as well.
