NCSO: Murder suspect's truck found at Hartsfield-Jackson

COVINGTON - Newton County Sheriff's Office investigators missed the suspect in the Guanchez murder case, but nabbed his truck at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Friday morning, according to Lt. Bill Watterson.

Porfiro Roman, 27, has been the chief suspect in the case since his wife, Carmen Guanchez, also 27, was found dead at her home at 15 Ashley Court late last month.

Watterson said NCSO investigators have been following leads since that time and were led to the airport Friday.

"We are speculating that he (Roman) has left Georgia," he said. "We've been chasing him and he knew we were on his trail. It is disappointing not to be able to close this homicide out, but we're still not finished. There are still some things we plan to do to try and capture him."

The woman's body was discovered after co-workers, neighbors and a roommate became concerned when she failed to show up for work at an Atlanta-area Hilton Inn.

Investigators believed at the time that Roman had fled in a white 2003 Ford pickup with Georgia license number ASI 6615, and that is the vehicle they impounded at the airport.

Warrants have been issued for Roman charging him with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children in the second degree and concealing the death of another.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to assist the NCSO with the investigation. It was first feared that Roman had taken the couple's two children, ages 3 and 6, when he fled, but they were later discovered at a relative's home, according to GBI spokesman John Bankhead.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Roman, who Watterson said may also use aliases, including his wife's name - Guanchez - is asked to contact the U.S. Marshals Office at 770-508-2500 or call the NCSO at 678-625-1406.
