COVINGTON - Covington will have its first "Idol" in a few weeks.
At the Covington Lions Club's third annual Sherman's Last Burning Fall Festival & BBQ Cook Off in October, residents will have the chance to compete in the Covington Idol Finals, a singing competition.
This is the first year for the competition at the festival and is also the first year for a lot of other events at the event, including a reptile show and other attractions.
Doreen Stallworth, publicity chair for the event, said the club hopes to bring in more community members and people outside of the community with unique activities at the festival.
The Idol contest - based on the hit Fox television show "American Idol" - is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 11 on Stage 1 at Legion Fairgrounds in Covington, but entries must be postmarked by Friday.
To enter, individual performers age 14 and older must record one song on a nonreturnable cassette tape or CD and send it to Covington Lions Club, 55 High Point Forest Drive, Covington, GA 30016. Along with the recording, contestants need to send in a $20 nonrefundable entry fee in the form of a check or money order, a picture and a registration form found online at www.covingtongalions.org. Contestants ages 14 to 17 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the form.
Before Sept. 22, an anonymous panel of judges will review entries and select the 15 finalists who will perform in the final round at the festival; the finalists will be notified by Sept. 22.
Finalists will perform at the festival with backup country/light rock band Cross Plains, which will provide them with a list of 40 to 50 songs to choose from to perform in the competition.
The top five contestants will receive cash and prizes - first place takes home $250 and a recording session; second place gets $150; third place gets $100; fourth place gets $75; and fifth place gets $50. All contestants receive a Sherman's T-shirt.
