Prayer event set for Sept. 11

COVINGTON - A national movement called Cry Out America will be observed in Covington on Thursday.

The Awakening America Alliance, a nonpartisan, broad coalition of denominations, churches and ministries, is asking communities throughout the country to participate in the event to call for a spiritual awakening, said Tom Davis, organizer of the local event.

Cry Out America is being held on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, which the alliance's Web site claims were a wake-up call for the nation, prompting many Americans to renew their prayer lives.

Now, organizers are calling for a similar spiritual awakening through Cry Out America, a simultaneous nationwide prayer gathering.

The local event will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on the Square in Covington and will include prayers and scripture readings from local pastors and gospel music. Newton County Board of Commissioners Chairman Aaron Varner and former Covington Mayor Sam Ramsey will give readings of historic prayers, Davis said.

Cry Out America will host a special evening service in New York City that will include Christian leaders and musicians and Sept. 11 first responders to be aired internationally on God TV to more than 400 million people.
