Election 2008: The Job of BOC Chairman

The chairman of the Newton County Board of Commissioners is elected to a four-year term and serves as an at-large representative.

The position has an annual starting salary of $78,247.21, which increases with each term based on cost of living allowances and length of service. The chairman is charged with running the day-to-day operations of the county, oversees the roads department and implements policies set by county commissioners.

The chairman gets no vote except in the event of a tie and does not have veto power.

The chairman represents Newton County on various regional and state policy panels and boards of directors, including the Board of Managers for the Association County Commissioners of Georgia; the Northeast Regional Development Commission Board of Directors; the Industrial Development Authority and the boards of physical and mental health.
