COVINGTON - The Eastside Lady Eagles softball team was riding high after beating Worth County 6-0 and long-time rival Lakeview Ft. Oglethorpe 1-0 in the opening round of the Class AAA Fast Pitch softball finals at the Columbus Softball Complex on Thursday.
Unfortunately for Eastside, all good rides have to come to an end. That's what happened to the Lady Eagles as they lost to Region 8-AAA rival Oconee County 7-0 Friday in the winner's bracket of the state tournament. Eastside came into Friday's matchup with Oconee County on a roll, surrendering only one run in their last 12 games. The Lady Eagles had shut out 11 of their 12 opponents. The loss to the Lady Warriors was the Eagles' third in four games this season to Oconee County. As a result of the loss, the Lady Eagles have taken the hard route to winning the state championship. Before Eastside can take on Oconee County again for the title, they must beat the winner of the Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe/St. Pius winner at 10:30 a.m. today. LFO and St. Pius played in a late game Friday night. If Eastside advances, it will have to beat the Lady Warriors in two straight games with the first one starting at 12:30 p.m. and the second game starting at 2:30, if needed. Oconee County reached the championship round with a 7-1 win over Northside, Columbus and a 2-0 win over St. Pius X Thursday.More like this story
