Man charged with public indecency

COVINGTON - A 48-year-old Covington man has been arrested and charged with public indecency in relation to a flurry of sightings of a naked man in the western side of the county, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

Marcus Wade Mitchell, 48, of 45 Wisteria Blvd., was arrested Friday after investigators tracked him down by a tag number obtained by one of his victims, NCSO Investigator Sonny Goodson said.

Goodson said the NCSO had received a call Oct. 16 from a motorist who reported a completely nude man at the intersection of Magnet and Oak Hill roads, standing outside his vehicle and fondling himself.

"Of course, by the time a deputy arrived, he was gone," Goodson said.

The next morning, however, a Newton County School System bus driver reported that a nude man driving a blue pickup had pulled up next to her bus in the vicinity of Brown Bridge and Salem roads. She, too, said the man was fondling himself. Deputies were again unable to get to the location in time to apprehend the suspect.

After receiving the two reports, Goodson said he learned from another investigator that a similar complaint had been received from a 76-year-old woman. She had told investigators that she had encountered the nude man when she left a Brown Bridge Road grocery store two weeks before.

When Goodson spoke to her, she told him she had also seen him a second time doing the same thing on the road where she lived.

Mitchell was charged with three counts of public indecency. Goodson said as far as he knew, the suspect had no previous criminal history.
