Softball roundup: Eastside one win away from state tournament

The Eastside softball team is one win away from a trip to the Class AAA state tournament in Columbus.

The Lady Eagles (26-5-1 overall) beat Lumpkin County 3-0 and Ringgold 5-0 in the opening rounds of the Class AAA North State Sectional on Friday at Lanier Pointe in Gainesville.

Eastside now faces Morgan County at 2 p.m. today in Gainesville. The winner of that game earns a trip to the state tournament next week in Columbus.

If the Lady Eagles fall to Morgan County, they will have another chance to earn a berth at 5 p.m.

The last time Eastside advanced out of the sectional to the state tournament was in 2006.

In Class AAAA, Heritage dropped a 2-0 decision to Northwest Whitfield in its opening game in the Class AAAA North Sectional at Hobgood Park in Woodstock.

The Lady Patriots will play Alexander at 11 a.m. today in the losers bracket.

Alcovy's game against Harlem in the Class AAAA South Sectional at Lovejoy Park in Hampton was rained out. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play at 8 a.m. today.

In Class AAAAA, Newton's game with Houston County was also washed out at Lovejoy Park. The Lady Rams will play at 8 a.m. today.
