COVINGTON - Newton County voters will have a chance to hear candidates speak out on the issues one last time before the Nov. 4 General Election at a candidates forum that will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Turner Lake Complex.
Candidates for Board of Commissioners chairman; districts 1, 3 and 5; sheriff; Board of Education districts 2 and 4; tax commissioner; State Senate District 17 and State House of Representatives District 95 are expected to participate.
"We'll ask three questions of the chairman, sheriff, commissioners and Board of Education candidates and two questions for the tax commissioner and state representatives," said Sherry Dudley, office manager for the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce, one of the event's sponsors. "The questions will be asked by moderators. There will be no questions from the audience at all."
Dudley said the government affairs committee of the Chamber decided not to open up the floor to the public to avoid personal attacks on candidates.
Candidates will also have the opportunity to give opening and closing statements, Dudley said.
Typically, the Chamber hosts a legislative forum featuring current elected officials, but with the election looming, this year decided to change up its normal format, Dudley said.
"I think people need to see what a lot of the candidates have to say," she said.
The event's other sponsors are Newton County Farm Bureau and the Covington News.
Turner Lake Complex is located at 6185 Turner Lake Road.
