CONYERS - Rockdale County authorities are investigating the Tuesday evening crash that killed a local man on Christian Circle, near the Newton County line.
David Doug White, 67, of 1441 Brandy Shoals Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash that occurred at about 9:40 p.m.
According to Rockdale County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Jodi Shupe, it appeared White lost control of his 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang as he was driving east when he approached a curve in the 1300 block of Christian Circle. The car spun off the roadway and into a ditch. White's car struck an embankment, causing the car to hit a utility pole.
Tuesday's crash was the ninth traffic fatality of the year in Rockdale County, Shupe said.
Family and friends said Wednesday White was returning home from a birthday dinner with friends. His wife became concerned that he had not returned and called the sheriff's office.
White was a financial advisor in Conyers and a member of the Rotary Club of Rockdale County. In 2006, White, along with his family and friends, organized a bone marrow donor screening to find a match for his daughter, Lisa White, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
Lisa White died in November.
Friends Linda Poynter Williams and Sarah Sanford said White seemed to know everybody in the community through his work as an Edward Jones broker and through the Rotary Club.
"I felt like I got a college degree without having the paper in hand," Sanford said. "He was a great teacher. I learned so much just by sitting down with him."
A memorial service is planned for Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Rockdale County Auditorium, 903 Main St., in Conyers. For more details, see the full text of White's obituary on page 5A of today's paper.
