Oxford College to hold family weekend

OXFORD - Families and friends of Oxford College will enjoy a celebration this weekend.

Starting Friday and ending Sunday, the campus will be home to its annual Family Weekend: Celebrating Oxford Students.

The campus will hold a few events Friday afternoon and evening, several more throughout the day Saturday and a couple more Sunday morning.

Some events are free and open to the public, such as Saturday's 8 p.m. movie "Wall-E" on the campus quad and Sunday's 11 a.m. family worship service at Allen Memorial Methodist Church, while others require a $25 registration fee, which includes access to Saturday's 11:30 a.m. picnic. Registration is from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday in Candler Hall Student Center.

Honi Migdol in the office of student activities at the college said the weekend is a time for the campus to be open, the students to be celebrated and families to visit their current students.

"It coincides with Emory's family weekend, so if parents have students at both campuses, they can be there at the same time," she said. "A lot of times parents drop their students off at orientation ... and never see them in their natural atmosphere."

She said this year's events are more socially oriented than in the past and also loosely structured to offer a relaxing atmosphere.

The weekend starts Friday with a 4 p.m. open house at Candler Hall Student Center with Oxford faculty and staff and an art exhibit tour, a 5:15 p.m. interfaith peace service at the chapel and an 8 p.m. coffee house with live music and refreshments.

The celebration continues Saturday with several day workshops, a 7 p.m. basketball game in Williams Gym and either the 8 p.m. movie or the 8 p.m. event called Heavenly Bodies, which features astronomy and math instructors teaching astronomy through a telescope viewing and discussion on the athletic field.

The weekend ends Sunday with a 10 a.m. brunch and the worship service, also featuring the Oxford College Chorale.
