Names sought for light ceremony

COVINGTON - If you know somebody who deserves a bit of recognition, now's your chance to put that person in the spotlight.

The Arts Association in Newton County, Main Street Covington and local governments are seeking nominations from the community for the person or group that should flip the switch to light the Newton County Historic Courthouse during this year's downtown holiday celebration.

"The Lighting of the Courthouse is such a wonderful holiday tradition we have here in Newton County," said Abigail Morgan Coggin of the Arts Association. "Through involvement with other organizations downtown, it was decided that we need to share this experience with others and one way to do that was by allowing people to be nominated to flip the switch. This is a great way to honor someone in our community who is deserving."

Past honorees include Eastside High School Band Director Alan Fowler; Navigators Team, a group of special needs children and their parents; and several past mayors of Covington.

The nominee should be someone who is "selfless and gives without wanting anything in return," according to a press release issued by organizers.

"We have had several nominations over the past four years, however, we would love to have more. This is just a small way that we have of recognizing a person or persons who give back to our community by donating their time and efforts," Coggin said.

The winner is selected by a committee of representatives from the Arts Association and Main Street Covington.

The following information should be included in the nomination: Name and contact information for nominator, including mailing address, e-mail and phone number; name and contact information for nominee; and an essay explaining, in 500 words or less, "Why I Am Nominating This Individual and/or Group."

Applications can be mailed to Lighting of the Courthouse Nominee, c/o Arts Association, 1106 Washington St., Covington, Ga. 30014 or e-mailed to acoggin@newtoncountyarts.org. All applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7.

The Lighting will take place at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20.
