Chamber beach party coming up

COVINGTON - Summer may be officially over, but the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce is offering one last opportunity to go to a beach party.

The 15th Annual Covington Beach Party will take place Oct. 25 and this year will feature A1A, a Jimmy Buffet cover band from Cobb County.

The group plays classic rock, acoustic, blues and beach music and is the only Jimmy Buffett cover band endorsed by the entertainer.

The band frequently performs at Cheeseburger in Paradise, Buffet's restaurant in Atlanta, and has entertained Ted Turner, Bill Gates, CNN staffers, the Atlanta Braves and the United States Navy.

Usually held indoors, this year's event will offer a new "Chastain-style" setting outside at the Church at Covington, located off Ga. Highway 142 in Oxford.

The concert is one of the Chamber's annual fundraisers.

"We do several special events throughout the year to keep (membership) dues low," said Lisa Powell, director of programs for the Chamber.

"The Chamber looks at this event as a community event. We want to bring the community together," she added.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring blankets, food, drinks and chairs. Tables no larger than 36 inches by 36 inches are also allowed.

Seating will start at 6:30 p.m., with the show to begin at 8 p.m. There will be food for sale at the venue.

Tickets can be purchased early for $25 each or for $30 at the door. Children age 10 and under get in free with the purchase of an adult ticket.

Sponsorships are also available for $1,000 and include a table for up to 12 people. To buy tickets or for more information, call the Chamber at 770-786-7510, drop by 2101 Clark St. or visit www.newtonchamber.com.
