NMC group to hold golf fundraiser

COVINGTON - The Newton Medical Center Auxiliary isn't waiting for the leaves to change color to celebrate autumn. The group is following the established tradition of teeing off at the 18th annual Autumn Action Golf Tournament, set for Friday at Indian Creek Golf Club.

"It's always a fun event," Auxiliary President Michelle Green said. "It's a good networking event and a good time to meet new people because you typically don't play with your group."

The tournament will have a Lauderdale format with a shotgun start at noon, and players will have A-B-C-D classifications based on their handicaps.

Registration is $125 per person and Green said sponsorships, which include one or more players based on the level of sponsorship, are available from $350 to $2,500. A putting contest is also set to be held. Tickets for that event are $5 each.

"We hope to reach our digital mammography goal," she said, adding that the auxiliary has previously raised $440,000 of the total $500,000 price tag on the state-of-the-art mammography equipment that is already in use at the Women's Diagnostic Center. "We have about $60,000 left to reach our goal, and we're hoping we'll complete that. We're aiming high."

But, if golf isn't your game, those interested in assisting the auxiliary in reaching their goal can also help by participating in the Ball Drop Contest. A helicopter will fly over the fairway and drop numbered balls on the green. The prize is $1,000 if your lucky ticket matches the number on the ball that goes in the hole first or is closest to the hole. Tickets are $10.

Green said a vendor health fair will be set up at Indian Creek Golf Club prior to the tournament.

"A sponsorship gets you an entry into the health fair. There will be vendors and physicians who offer screening services," she said. "Players can go through the vendor fair and then have lunch before the tournament."

The fair will run from 10 a.m. to noon, and lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

Prizes for the event include a car for the hole-in-one-contest and gift certificates to the pro shop.
